Dabbu Kosam Jabbu

Dabbu Kosam Jabbu

The industry works on success formula's. There will be periods where action films rule the roost, then there will be love story trends etc. The ideas for scripts keep drying up, and things will be dependant on the presentation. But as there are no bounds for creativity, everynow and then directors come up with new ideas that havent been hithertho exposed.

Once such pattern that we are seeing these days is using 'lesser known ailments' for creating an interesting script which makes the audience go spellbound.

Shizophrenia/Visual Hallucination :

A hallucination is a perception in the absence of a stimulus.Schizophrenia (pronounced skit-suh-FREH-nee-uh) is a psychotic disorder or group of psychotic disorders that cause a patient to lose touch with reality. They imagine objects and events to be very different from what they really are. If untreated, most people with schizophrenia gradually withdraw from the outside world. Hallucinations often take the form of hearing imaginary voices and a patient may believe that he or she is receiving messages from a supernatural or unknown source.

This ailment was used in the movie Naa Oopiri. Though the movie didnt do well, it created a shock among the audience and the director also got accolades. The hero Vadde Naveen will be imagining that his wife is alive and keeps conversing with her though she died long ago. This was also used in Lage Raho Munna bhai and later in Shankar Dada Zindabad where the hero feels that Gandhiji has come to help him out, though all that was only his imagination. The interests of the audience was well held. This concept was also used in the recent flick Ontari where the hero Gopichand believes that heroine Bhavana is very much alive though she gets killed by the villians. The director has a great advantage while dealing with these scripts because he can picturize the imaginations as well and make the viewer believe the same.

Declarative Memory/Short Term Memory Loss:

Another ailment which was a source of idea generation for film makers has been Short term Memory Loss. It was best used in Hollywood flick 'Memento'. In this the protaganist suffers from profound anterograde amnesia, which is depicted accurately in the film. The disorder is marked by an inability to create memories of facts and events. This is often referred to as declarative memory. It was very well depicted in the movie momento where the protoganist takes help from tatoos and notes to trace the killers of his lover. The story of super hit Ghazini was also taken from this concept. Another hollywood flick '51 dates' used the concept where the heroine forgets everthing that happenned to her on a daily basis, and the hero tries to woo her everyday. This concept too was used in the Bhoomika-Shivaji starrer 'Satyabhama'. The trailors of the upcoming film of Manoj Kumar 'Nenu meeku telusa' also seems to follow this concept.

All this makes one believe that the best way to make a unique script not used by anyone else could be to try and find out about these little known disorders and weave a script around them. This will create a sense of freshness in terms of story telling. Though its debatable whether it is ethical to make entertainment out of diseases.
